From 2010-12, the author went every six months to teach at two major secondary schools in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Over these visits, he spent hundreds of hours teaching several hundred teenage schoolboys, and some schoolgirls, in the classroom and in informal conversation groups. In this book, he recounts his experiences and presents what he learned about their lives, study, ideas, interests, and ambitions. Who, for example, would have thought, in a society routinely dismissed as reclusive and repressive, that schoolchildren learn about Ireland, about Maoris and their customs, have discussions on being creative and on animal rights, that young boys idolize a Barcelona footballer, and that a favorite joke concerns a North Korean army deserter? What emerged through these experiences and observations, in school and in candid talks with teachers, officials, and a wide variety of ordinary people, is an intimate portrait, nowhere else available, of the human face of Pyongyang and of a generation set in future years to lead the country.

he writes in this book with fun and immediacy
By Richard H. Lawrence
Stewart Lone writes with perception and warm humanity. He leads us into a world of real people, many of them spirited young people, as he recounts his hours and days in Pyongyang, North Korea. Few people outside North Korea have Stewart Lone's experiences within the country, and even fewer have the capacity to write about it with grace and insight. From the very early days in the Chongnyon Hotel, Lone goes on to describe the weather, buildings, food, clothing, cars on the street and, most memorably, encounters with people - from Manager Kim and Teacher Kim to numerous others. This is a book for those who want to know more about the everyday lives, humour and hopes of ordinary people in North Korea. There is no shortage of books on North Korea but few delve beneath the political hard surface and the stereotypical views that pervade the media. Few go beyond caricature of this nation of people. The book has unique photographs of many of the people and places mentioned in the text. Stewart Lone is an academic, a historian, who writes with an academic thoroughness in not missing details. While he knows the history of the Korean peninsula well, he writes in this book with fun and immediacy, leaving the larger context in the background, to take the reader into the surprisingly human world of his friends and school pupils in Pyongyang.

Oh Gosh, they are human beings too
By Peter Wilson
The easy to read vignettes of life in Pyongyang middle school classrooms humanise and to some degree demystify North Korea for the reader. From our every day media, it is hard to get any sense of what life is like and what North Korean people might think. By contrast, Stewart Lone's perceptive first hand observations give us insight into the personal lives, attitudes and humour of his pupils and fellow teachers.
