is a good suspense that is very nicely written
By It's About The Book
This book is described as a “romantic” suspense. Well, someone’s missed the whole point of “romance”…that the story will have a “happily-ever-after” ending for a couple. There isn’t one, so don’t be mislead by the description. There is a vague “happy for now”…very vague. There wasn’t a single blush…no sexual tension…no heat. None.
What there is, though, is a good suspense that is very nicely written. The blurb is good, and if that attracts you, this may be right up your alley. I read a lot of mystery/thriller and suspense books with no hint of romance and enjoy them throughly. This book was no exception.
The main character, Brynn, is a successful author. She has a couple of books out that have sold well and a third work in progress when she receives a call that her brother is missing during a trip to their hometown. Brynn and her brother, Mark, haven’t been back to Genessa Point since the death of their father eighteen years earlier, and Brynn would have never gone back if Mark hadn’t been missing. Brynn is worried and angry with pretty much everyone. While her anger at a town where the majority had believed that the father she adored was a serial killer is understandable, her many angry outbursts made her seem a little shrill at times, but I liked her anyway.
Sheriff Garrett Dane is a patient man. He was never upset or impatient when Brynn was angry and demanding. Garret was a friend of Mark’s when Brynn was really young, so even though they haven’t seen each other in many years, they aren’t strangers. Garrett’s twelve year old daughter, Savannah, and her dog and constant companion, Henry, add a lot of depth and humor to the story. Garrett tried from the first day that Brynn returned to Genessa Point to find Mark and keep her informed as much as possible of any leads they received. But Garrett had a huge strike against him…the man who was most convinced that Jonah Wilder, Brynn’s father, was the Genessa Point serial killer, was Garrett’s father, former sheriff, William Dane.
I thought I had figured out the mystery a couple of different times…then another clue to the past turned up and…nope…I was wrong. The ending was a total surprise to me. Maybe I should have figured it out, but I didn’t. This is a nicely written and plotted story, and I don’t think there is a single swear word in the whole book…if there is, I missed it. There is some innuendo and some fairly graphic descriptions of violence, but I honestly believe that anyone in your family could read this without being shocked.

Can't Find My Way Home
By Linda Demaree
I almost couldn't find my way through this one. I have always been a Carlene Thompson fan, but I feel her earlier novels were by far her best. This one kind of drug for me and was kind of sappy in the romance department, which is not my cup of tea. I had it figured out from early in the book, so the ending was no great shakes for me. I am hoping Carlene Thompson hasn't lost her touch. Don't get me wrong, it was an all right read, it was just kind of slow for me.

Has Thompson lost her touch?
By Laureal Christian
I loved Thompson's "Black for Remembrance" and "In the Event of My Death". It's hard to imagine I'm reading the same author. Was I just too young to know better when I first started reading her or is her writing devolving? This book was so bad I couldn't finish-- I may have gotten halfway through. I'm one of those people who feels compelled to finish what I start so it's extremely rare for me to drop a book mid-read, but for this I made a generous exception.
The plot and dialogue seemed way too contrived and unrealistic. Granted, I realize this is a work of fiction, but one thing about a well done mystery is that the premise is logical or seductive enough to draw you in. This premise was not only far-fetched, but character's reactions to various events were illogical. For instance, the policeman's/love interests' response to the main character's hysterics: Would a policeman really tell a woman in crisis to "shutup"?
Which brings me to another point: It's a real pity when a female author can't write an authentic sounding male voice. The love interest/town cop doesn't read anything close to a man. He reads like a woman's lame fantasy of one. The dialogue was so ridiculously contrived it grieved me to read it. Some women authors have the incredible talent of pulling off a believable male character (e.g. Karin Slaughter), but sadly, Thompson is not among them.
It was a pain to read this book. I could not get engaged. I would not recommend this as a good mystery novel, no matter how much of a mindless read you may be up for.
