About the Author
Thom Gunn was born in Gravesend, Kent in 1929. After National Service and a short time living in Paris, he enrolled at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read English. He published his first book of poems, Fighting Terms, while he was still an undergraduate. In 1954 he moved to San Francisco and held a one-year Fellowship at Stanford University. He published over thirty books of poetry, including The Man with Night Sweats, which won the Forward Prize for Poetry in 1992, and Boss Cupid (2000). Thom Gunn died in 2004.

Great CS1 course text

After much back and forth I received a review copy of this book.

This is not your average Python book -- it is a college text intended for first-semester CS courses that happens to use Python. As such, in assumes absolutely no previous programming experience, and it looks like any previous computer experience is optional. Not only that, but the book starts with a step-by-step introduction to the art of computational problem solving. This is an idea that goes well beyond hacking together a website!

The book is incredibly thorough: there are exercises throughout the text (not just at the end of each chapter), and it includes a plethora of examples, screenshots, tables, charts, diagrams, and photos. (Yes, my picture is in there -- so are Alan Turing, JFK, and K&R. :-)

The author is not afraid of taking a stance; for example, he omits the 'break' and 'continue' statement because they do not fit within the paradigm of structured programming. This actually fits with the general goal of the book, which is to give an overview of many areas of computer science without getting too deep into the minutiae of any topic. I love the final chapter, which is an overview of the history of computing, starting with Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace.

At the same time, the book gives plenty of useful practical information, such as instructions for using IDLE and an extensive explanation of turtle graphics, culminating in a horse race simulation. (The author's Baltimore roots seem to show through here. :-)

All in all, I think this book is a great text for anyone teaching CS1 or interested in familiarizing themselves with computer science through serious self-study.

A well written resource for beginner programmers and a concise reference for others!

I found this book to really helpful. I am a student of Professor Dierbach and picked up this book after taking a OOP course with him and I must say this book is truly outstanding.

The presentation of content is extremely beginner friendly and tackles Object Oriented Programming using Python from scratch. It is an extraordinary introduction to programming and I have often found myself explaining various concepts to my peers using some of the concise wordings from the book.

I am truly impressed with the "Motivation" section in the beginning of the chapters as it puts the chapter in perspective. For anyone even mildly interested in the Computer Science discipline, this book teaches the most valuable lesson of programming being a tool to problem solving, the central focus of the book.

Although the book is beginner friendly, it is a wonderful Python and programming resource in general for intermediate programmers as well. The exercises aid comprehension greatly and the "Program Modification Problem" almost forces you to understand the topic. It is evident much thought and effort has been put into the book to ensure the reader gets the information he / she needs to venture into the field.

All in all, this book is very well thought out and in my own experience, I have not found any other resource similar to this. I highly reccomend this to anyone interesting in Python, programming, or CS students.

A Great Way to Learn Computer Science

I teach computer science at Williams College, including the introductory courses. This is a great textbook for my students' "CS1" class, and for the independent learner. The book combines clear computer science ideas with applications that are motivating to today's students, like bioinformatics. It uses straightforward language and encourages the reader that computer science is approachable, important, and fun.

Python is a great choice for a first language. It is popular in industry, so it speaks to the pragmatic student. Yet, because it eschews boilerplate and looks like pseudocode, it also lets the algorithms shine through instead of tripping the new programmer up with syntax.

A good CS1 text teaches the reader how to make a computer do what he or she wants. That's programming. A great CS1 text also teaches how to make a computer perform a task efficiently and elegantly. That's computer science, and this is a great text for first encountering it.

About the Author
I was born in Worsley, near Manchester, England, the setting of the first of my five children’s books. I attended Sir William Borlase Grammar School near Marlow, and Godalming Grammar in Surrey, before enrolling at Manchester University. I received a BA in general studies (English and Ancient History). The following year, 1960-61, I enrolled at the University of London and received a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. After a year teaching in a public school, I emigrated to the United States. While teaching in Jefferson County, Kentucky and the University of Louisville, I gained an MA in English (1965) and a wife. I began teaching at Eastern Michigan University, enrolling at the university of Michigan, where, in due time, I received a PhD. in English language and literature. I had always been interested in the efforts countries went to in order to gain some advantage over their rivals. While at EMU, as it is always known, I wrote a trilogy of espionage novels under the pseudonym, Jon Winters. I didn't think people be thrilled to find a professor writing such works--in fact, the thought that a professor of English could write anything of general interest seemed to impress people. They were published by Avon Books. With all the changes in publishing, I decided to revise and expand the espionage novels, and they are now available through Amazon Books.

Another Exciting Novel of Espionage

Catenary Exchange (Part 2 of the Drakov Chronicles), takes the reader deeper into the espionage world of mid-nineteen seventies East Berlin. It’s another page turner, but Gilbert Cross is a writer who also rewards reflection. There is a rich vein of humor and satire to be mined à la John Le Carré. Relationships between characters are particularly well drawn and some of the minor characters most memorable. The exciting climax explains the title, which, in the best traditions of the spy novel, is intriguing and obscure at the same time. I was happy to find Colonel Novetsky and Neville Conyers reunited against the cunning and ruthless Anton M. Drakov.

An excellent spy novel with themes of renewed interest

This is the second in a trilogy of spy novels set in the Cold War era when a physical barrier blocked free movement of people and their ideas between East and West Europe. The novel has people working to cross this barrier. It’s an interesting story about spies, their thoughts and interactions. It also presents a mood and setting which are more relevant today with President Putin expanding Russian influence, and Edward Snowden trapped in Russia and seen as a traitor to the U.S. I enjoyed reading it enormously. It has excellent descriptions.

Cross triumphs again!

This is yet another excellent Cold War book in the Drakov trilogy by Gilbert Cross. Each character in the story is given a vitality and "real-ness" which is quite stunning and not normally found in such similar novels. I recommend this book to enthusiasts and to those curious about such a grim time in political history, showing the levels to which mankind can sink in the name of political ideology. Well worth the read!

About the Author

Kevin O'Hara, Professor of Silviculture, University of California- Berkeley

Kevin O'Hara is Professor of Silviculture at the University of California - Berkeley where he teaches field and classroom courses in forestry. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington and taught for 8 years at the University of Montana before joining the University of California faculty. He is the author of over 120 scientific papers and served on the editorial boards or as associate editor of the European Journal of Forest Research, Forestry, and the Journal of Forestry. His research focuses on a variety of aspects of forest stand dynamics and their application to silviculture. However, the bulk of his research focuses on multiaged stand dynamics and silviculture. He has published over 40 papers on the topic of multiaged silviculture and has served as the leader of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Uneven-aged Silviculture Research Group (IUFRO 1.05).
