No this is not a literal translation. However this translation really GETS the spirit of the Tao te ching. If Lao Tsu were alive, he would likely approve of this, which cannot be said of many of the more literal translations.

This book starts out by presenting the evidence for hydrophilic interactions in biochemical processes and then goes on to describe the applications of the hydrophilic interactions in these processes, specifically protein folding, protein association, self assembly and molecular recognition.

In Part I of this series, it was shown that the role of the so-called hydrophobic effect in biochemical processes was over-exaggerated. On the other hand, both experimental data and theoretical arguments support the conclusion that the hydrophilic, rather than hydrophobic interactions are the more important effects. In this volume, the author focuses on the applications of the hydrophilic interactions in processes such as solubility of proteins, protein folding, self assembly and molecular recognition. Hydrophilic interactions provide a powerful and coherent explanation of some biochemical processes, which until recently, were not understood.

There are no other books of this kind. There are two books which deal with the role of hydrophobic effects (by C Tanford and A Ben-Naim), but these are quite obsolete.

In this book author focused on very important “driving forces” – on the hydrophobic interaction, or on role of the solvent-induced interaction in conformation of macromolecule. This book is addressed to the physicists, who have an interest to the structural biology. It contains a lot of concepts of protein folding, but author with ease and grace shows how using simple models and having a strict statistical physical approach, it is possible to explain such a complicated process as protein folding. I, as a teacher of "Statistical Physics of Macromolecules", using the material in this book, significantly upgraded my lectures that benefited students. Moreover, using some of the concepts in this book I am developing the idea that hydrophilic, rather hydrophobic interactions are more important in biological processes such as protein folding

About the Author
Marjorie Raskin began doing psychiatric research while a resident at New York State Psychiatric Institute. After her own Panic Disorder came into full bloom, she started her studies of anxiety and panic at University of California Medical Center. She set up U.C.'s first Anxiety Clinic. Her most important finding was the connection of emotional abuse and neglect in childhood with Panic Disorder in the adult. She continued her anxiety work after moving back to New York, first at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and later at Queens Hospital Center. She established Anxiety Clinic at both hospitals. She studied writing at The New School and Sarah Lawrence.

Dr. Raskin's dialogue rings true, the people in her life memorable, and her splendid candor a worthy standard for anyone writing a truthful memoir. The Anxiety Expert will find a wide audience, including those who can draw hope from her courage in finding a way through debilitating panic attacks, and those of us yearning for books more fulfilling than fiction.

"A Triumph of the Spirit"

In one sense, this book is about a childhood dream. In elementary school in Brooklyn, Margie Tucker begins to feel that she may have a calling. Her aunt has been stricken with polio and she thinks about becoming a doctor who will find a cure for her aunt's disease. At age twelve, she makes the solemn decision to go for it. She studies hard, makes top grades in high school, nails the SATs, gets admitted to Radcliffe College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. By this time, another New Yorker, Jonas Salk, has discovered the polio vaccine. But, Margie is about to realize much of her childhood dream. She becomes a doctor, marries a doctor, and as Dr. Marjorie Raskin becomes a psychiatrist at leading hospitals in California and New York. This, in itself, is quite a story. It is a straight-from-the-heart memoir of an often shy Brooklyn kid who hit the books hard and made it through medical school. But, Dr. Raskin's book is much more than that. With all her professional accomplishments and insights as a psychiatrist, she was not able to escape her own early demons. Out of the blue, on the campus of Radcliffe, at Columbia, in hospital wards, and in relationships with men, fellow doctors who loved her, she was stricken with severe anxiety and terrible panic attacks. Why? She didn't know. With the same determination she had in pursuing her career in medicine, she sets out to find out what is wrong with her. It is this story that Dr. Raskin tells so bravely and makes her book such a triumph of the spirit.

Clear information packed on variation for physicists

This book from 1966 has been republished in a Dover edition and that usually means that it is a book that has become a classic, and this turns out to be correct in this case. There are many types of books on variational stuff. There are the mathematically inclined books on variational calculus. This is not one of them. This is a book on variational principles in theoretical physics. The style is clear and compact with many formulas and calculations given. It is a useful handbook on variational principles in physics and it could also serve as a text for a graduate level course. Its main weakness is perhaps in the lack of discussion of the conceptual background. It differs considerably from the classic by Yourgrau and Mandelstam which concentrates more on historical, philosophical, and conceptual aspects of the subject. But, if you have the right background for it, it is excellent.

In this somewhat interesting (if overpriced) look at how and where America's rebellious pop-culture child has ended up, Talevski details the machinations, politics, and philosophy involved in founding the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His telling of how it came to be housed in Cleveland along with his rundown of each year's induction ceremonies since the hall's 1986 founding is well done?and would have been enough. However, in the rest of the book?which is mostly a more in-depth look at each of the 149 inductees through 1997?Talevski offers nothing new except inductees' real and full names and dates of induction. The eclectic bibliographic information for each artist can indeed be helpful because it has been pulled from sources that are not always used to the fullest extent, but the entries themselves seldom reveal anything not already available in other pop-music reference works. Appendixes provide a chronological listing of inductees by year and category and, perhaps most interestingly, nominees who were not inducted. This is an excellent rock reference book.

This book provides a critical summary of the origins of rock and roll and the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. It details the early history of rock and the historical basis for the Hall of Fame's location in Northeast Ohio. It also serves as a biographical reference tool of the present Hall of Fame inductees. It provides a unique look at a very popular destination for today's rock fans.

Misleading advertisment

I received this book in great shape, but the picture and impression you see here is extremely misleading. The book is much, much smaller than expected with a bland beige cover and thin black writing. It looks nothing like this image from Amazon. When I unwrapped it, I was so sad that I paid $80.00 for it...this is NOT an $80 book...it's more like a $15.00 book. This was an xmas gift...so unfortunately I don't have enough time to return & reorder, or else I would. Shame.

About the Author

James G. Speight earned a BSc and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Manchester, England. Since 1998, he has been employed at CD&W Inc. as a consultant/author/lecturer on energy and environmental issues. Dr. Speight has more than 40 years of experience in areas associated with the properties and recovery of reservoir fluids. His work has also focused on the environmental effects and remediation technologies related to fossil fuel and synthetic fuel processing. Dr. Speight is the author of more than 400 publications, reports, and presentations and has taught more than 70 courses. He is the author and coauthor of more than 50 books and bibliographies related to fossil fuels, synthetic fuels, biofuels, fuel processing, and environmental issues. He is also the recipient of several awards.

A wonderful book. There are several overlapping topics discussed and to different extents by separate authors of chapters in the book. Some central editing my be required to remove duplications. It meets my needs as a teacher and of my students as a reference book. Though a hard copy, the binding is fragile.
