This book aims to bring together the areas of macroalgal taxonomy with strategies and methods used to characterise marine bioactive compounds. In addition, it looks at the importance of correct taxonomic characterization. It also describes applications of bioactive compounds from the marine environment and discusses how marine bioactive compounds represent a major market application in food and other industries.  It provides examples of bioactive compounds isolated from marine resources.

 

Examples are given as to how bioactive compounds have been used in functional food formulations and pharmaceutical applications, and how they alter biological activity to provide therapeutic benefits, nutritional values and health protection.

 

It looks at the screening process for identification of bioactive molecules including computing methods for efficient in silico analysis, and describes different production methods used for bioactive compound isolation and identification. Furthermore, this book provides an insight into the market opportunities that exist for the identification and commercialization of new marine bioactive compounds.  It also highlights regulations in the US, Europe, Japan and China regarding health or novel food claims for functional food products. 

 

About the Author
Maria Hayes is a natural products chemist based at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, in Dublin, Ireland. She is the current Marine Functional Foods Research Initiative scientific project manager and is involved in the harvesting of bioactive compounds from seaweeds, marine rest raw materials and microalgae. NutraMara is a €5 million project funded by the Marine Institute (MI), Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF), Ireland.

Daniel Hays (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies and professor of Old Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the author of From Every People and Nation, and he has coauthored Grasping God's Word; Preaching God's Word; Journey into God’s Word; The Story of Israel: A Biblical Theology; Iraq: Babylon of the End Times?; Apocalypse; and The Dictionary of Biblical Prophecy. He teaches adult Sunday school at his local church in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and preaches frequently throughout the nation.

Excellent intermediate-level book on hermeneutics

Grasping God's word is really an excellent intermediate-level book on studying and interpreting the Bible (hermeneutics). It goes into far more depth than more basic introductions to the topic, yet is far more accessible and easier to grasp than more advanced texts like The Hermeneutical Spiral. The approach taught by Duvall and Hays is very practical and easy to remember. To maximize learning you'll want to do as many of the exercises in the book as you have time for. Grasping God's Word is a fine choice both for Sunday School teachers and for a first course in hermeneutics at seminary.

How to Journey With God Through the Bible

Christians generally know they're supposed to read the Bible and that they're supposed to do something about it, but the Bible doesn't always make sense. The Bible was written to an audience that is removed from us by time and culture, so it's easy to miss what the original author intended to communicate to the original biblical audience. Misinterpretation of the Scripture is unfortunately all too prevalent.

In GRASPING GOD'S WORD, J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays walk us through a clear and helpful process for responsibly reading, interpreting, and applying the Bible. They call it the Interpretive Journey, and it's an imaginative and motivating description for what encountering God through the Scriptures is meant to look like. The authors outline five steps in the Interpretive Journey:
1. Grasp the text in their town. What did the text mean to the original audience?
2. Measure the width of the river to cross. What are the differences between the biblical audience and us?
3. Cross the principlizing bridge. What is the theological principle in this text?
4. Consult the biblical map. How does our theological principle fit with the rest of the Bible?
5. Grasp the text in our town. How should individual Christians today live out the theological principle?

The authors spend twenty-two chapters elaborating on the steps of this journey, pointing out important concepts such as context, word studies, who is in control of meaning, and the role of the Holy Spirit in interpretation. The last two sections give us some important insights on specific genres represented in the Old and New Testaments.

The point of GRASPING GOD'S WORD is knowing God more and experiencing the transformative power of God's Word, and this book does a great job of it. There are a lot of really great books out on how to study the Bible. This one is by far my favorite, and I recommend it for anyone who is serious about digging deep into the biblical text.

A book that every Christian should read

This is a highly readable, entry-level textbook on biblical hermeneutics. The authors assume no prior knowledge of biblical hermeneutics on the part of the reader. As such, the material is conveyed in simple, straightforward terms, along with a healthy dose of wit.

The book also strikes a good balance between theory and application. Topics discussed include levels of meaning, different literary genres in the Bible, and the role of the Holy Spirit. Every chapter also ends with applicative exercises serving to reinforce learning. Duvall and Hays do a thorough job of walking the reader through the exercises by providing a wealth of examples of their own.

I found especially helpful the methodical, step-by-step interpretive process that the book uses. I'd daresay its as scientific an approach as biblical hermeneutics can get. We are constantly reminded to understand the historical and literary contexts of the original biblical audience, to understand the meaning of the text and how it should be applied to us today.

A book that I'd recommend every Christian read in order to interpret the Bible correctly.

I was disappointed to find out that this edition did not allow ...

I was disappointed to find out that this edition did not allow me to use the online resources. I ordered it for that exact reason, but gave it two stars because the price was so cheap and they shipped on time. So if you aren't interested in the extra resources, this is a great deal. Especially since we are nursing students with loans piling up. But if you do want them, you are going to have to pay extra on top of the book, which would make it cheaper to buy it direct. The actual book was very general and lacked details, so I used a mental health success book congruently during my class and passed my Hesi with that book. Hope this helps and Good luck with your studies..

Chock-Full of Freudian Psychobabble

The eBook does not include the "Davis PLUS" code, as others had mentioned.

The reason this book ranks so low is that it is garbage. It consistently uses outdated terms and very confusing language to describe relatively straightforward concepts, as well as incorporating a large amount of research derived from Freudian Psychotherapy, a practice that up until this point was roundly rejected in every other psychology class that I've ever taken. For example, this is the explanation of the psychological factors associated with alcoholism and substance abuse:
The psychodynamic approach to the etiology of substance abuse focuses on a punitive superego and fixation at the oral stage of psychosexual development (Sadock & Sadock, 2007). Individuals with punitive superegos turn to alcohol to diminish unconscious anxiety and increase feelings of power and self-worth. Sadock and Sadock (2007) state, “As a form of self-medication, alcohol may be used to control panic, opioids to diminish anger, and amphetamines to alleviate depression” (p. 386)
