I'm glad I found this for my grandchild

Used these when I first started homeschooling back almost 20 years ago! I wish they updated them for the new generation! I'm glad I found this for my grandchild. They have a chart in the beginning of each week. I used that to find other homeschool materials (board games, computer programs, recipes, books, etc) that matched what we would be studying that week.

Very good place to start!

I have a 4 and 5 year old. I bought this to assist my four year old in learning her letters and basics as well as prepare/supplement my 5 year old for kidergarten. I found the material to be a little elemetary for my 5 year old, he seems to get bored if we do not move quickly, however he does enjoy the various activity ideas in the book. This book seems to be exactly what I was looking for in helping my 4year old though, she is very eager to learn with this as my guide. Two complaints: One, the pages will need to be copies prior to working them. This is not only due to the fact that I am using one book for two children but because they have cut/paste pages on the backs of regular pages and therefore you will have to cut up a perfectly good page on the back to do such an activity. Two, is that there should be a list of recommended items for each week. You need to pre-read the lesson plans for each week well in advance so that you have time to collect items needed (such as books, etc.). I ran into this problem my first week, traveling to the library for reading books, trying to find replacements when those weren't available and purchasing butcher paper for an activity. Overall, this is a great place to start. One other minor complaint is that the entire weeks lesson of science is usually geared toward a season, so if you are not following the typical school schedule (aug-may) your child will be learning about autumn in summer. You will need to adjust some of the the lessons to fit you and your child but as someone very new to homeschooling I am grateful for the planned out lessons and activity ideas. Just wish there was a list or recommended items, such as books, for each week to reduce prep time.

Only useful if you have a large library

I bought the book for my 4 yr old son, we're going to home school and thought I'd do a little trial run this year. Already the majority of the book is too easy for him. He doesn't mind doing the projects but nearly every page has to be photocopied, which means I spend quite a chunk of time at the computer scanning and printing. And forget finding the hundreds of books that they list. We live in a very small town with a library that has nothing for kids books, so I go to the next town over and even there I only found 2 of the books they had listed for their first two weeks of instruction. Very frustrating. If you have a huge library I think it'd be a great book.

About the Author

Peter H. Westfall is the Paul Whitfield Horn Professor of Statistics and James Niver Professor of Information Systems and Quantitative Sciences at Texas Tech University. A Fellow of the ASA and the AAAS, Dr. Westfall has published several books and over 100 papers on statistical theory and methods. He also has won several teaching awards and is the former editor of The American Statistician. He earned a PhD in statistics from the University of California, Davis.

Kevin S.S. Henning is a clinical assistant professor of business analysis in the Department of Economics and International Business at Sam Houston State University, where he teaches business statistics and forecasting. He earned a PhD in business statistics from Texas Tech University.

This is a interesting book because it presents advanced statistics differently from any other stats book I have read. This is not a bad thing, since it makes you look at problems differently. Overall though, quite a good read.

Chad Elkins has his own CPA practice in Chicago, and before that had experience working for the U.S. Tax Court and the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He has an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and passed all parts of the CPA exam the first time he took it with an almost perfect score. Tim Elkins, Chad's Father, has his own CPA practice in Texas, which he started after retiring from the Inspector General's Office of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Before retiring from government service, he was assigned to a special team that audited the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Loved this book!

Loved this book! I am a big fan of sketching and hand drawing over computer programs. While I do understand the importance of computers in design, I also understand the importance of being able to sketch out an idea on the fly and learning to see in a new way, especially for a visual industry. Sketching has almost becoming a lost art, and this book is perfect for students, design professionals, as well as those who just want to learn to sketch and see things in a new light.

The book is broken up into 3 chapters (furniture + lighting, interiors, architecture) with multiple drawing techniques in each chapter that emphasize the process. With it’s simple approach, easy to follow instructions and plenty of drawing examples, I wish this book would have been available when I was in school instead of the wordy, technical books that were available. It’s a visual book, for a visual concept that is done beautifully.

Demystifying the process of sketching

This is a wonderful book for the person who would like to learn how to sketch. For most, the act of drawing or sketching is a bit intimidating. Stephanie's book demystifies the process and breaks it down into step-by-step "chunks" that are quite manageable. Many will find this book approachable, easy to use and understand since it’s free of jargon or technical know-how. The book is also very well organized; the exercises begin by looking at small-scaled objects (such as chairs) and simple studies to large buildings as well as interiors that tackle more complex views (such as perspectives). Each little assignment provides clear instructions as well as stated objectives. Explanations are given to provide answers to the questions “Why?” and “How?” these exercises help develop a new way of seeing objects, shadows, light and contrast.
I would highly recommend the book to the beginning design student AND to the person who's just always been interested in picking up a pencil and a sketchbook to learn draw.

Taught in a simple and easy to understand manner

[[VIDEOID:36f5ec8809826aa061506dd468e4d6bf]]This is a great book for architecture students, sketchers and those who want to develop the skill of sketching. It's a 128-page paperback written by Stephanie Travis who teaches interior architecture and design.

The book collects lots of useful tips on sketching. You'll need observational drawing skills to get the most out of the book. Many of the examples require you to draw what you see. There's not so much of constructing objects from imagination. The main drawing tools used are markers and the fine, medium and thick stroke pens.

Earlier chapters focuses on the basic fundamentals and simple techniques that are used in the later chapters. There are techniques to help you present your drawings more clearly, lessons on perspective, exercises on positive and negative style of drawing, how to render textures and many more. The exercises are short and easy to follow.

The underlying concept is the process is more important than the end result itself. Through drawing, you'll learn more about the subject that you have drawn.

Overall, it's quite an insightful book with plenty of useful techniques. It's a good book for beginners.
