Wonderful Book

This book is a must for anyone who is interested in integration. McMinn offers practical, helpful and sincere concepts that an experienced and novice counselor can implement in any counseling setting. Most importantly, this book affirms the importance of the therapeutic relationship emphasizing humility and empathy, which are genuinely an overflow from the counselor's own walk with God. A must read.

Masterful Synthesis

Anyone doing counseling or therapy in a Christian context would do well to peruse this remarkable work. In an evolving field rife with controversy, the author presents a calm, reasoned, and inclusive overview of Christian therapeutics. While the basic orientation is to cognitive therapy, psychodynamic principles are not slighted. Subjects such as praying with (or for) the client, the use of Scripture, confession, forgiveness and redemption are all explored. Needless to say, it's not light reading, but it is accessible and understandable. The author presents different theories and points of view, treats all of them with respect, and offers a way for clinicians to think through and reason about clinical dilemmas.

Author Mark McMinn uses a delightful method of presenting brief clinical vignettes, with different possible approaches, different therapists, and different assumptions, and invites the reader to reason through each situation. There are, of course, no simple answers, but there are pitfalls to be avoided and lessons to be learned. The writing style is clear and lucid, with a gentle touch of humor. Ethical issues are discussed in depth. Beyond the techniques and vignettes, Author McMinn explores the foundations of Christian counseling, the underlying theology that must support any therapeutic efforts. The approach is not a bag of tricks. The vital ingredient must be the spiritual growth of the counselor/therapist.

This reviewer, now retired, would love to have had McMinn's book in hand when he was treating patients. For anyone doing Christian counseling now, I cannot recommend this book too highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

Spectacular photography

This is a perfect gift for a maniacal fly fisherman, the kind of guy that checks out the spiderwebs by the side of the creek to see what bugs have been hatching. The photographs of the various mayflies in different stages of their life cycles are absolutely, jaw-dropping spectacular. The accompanying text is mercifully light on the Latin taxonomy, but contains just the right amount of natural history. As a plus, some examples of flies imitating nymphs, duns and spinners are included at the end of each chapter, along with material info. Of course, they're well photographed, too. A few tips about fishing the hatches and spinner falls are tossed in as well. OK, so if you know what I'm talking about, you want this book. One caveat - the author lives in PA, so it's mostly about Eastern mayflies.

I purchased this book by Ted Fauceglia with the anticipation that his fine works were fully exemplified in this publication.
This book is an exceptional sample of Ted's work and I am immeasurably impressed by it. For the fly fisherman and fly tier this is a "must have" book, if not only to admire the beautiful insect images. The value in this book is not only the excellent images, but equqally the insect descriptions and distribution, along with the great fly patterns.
Don't hesitate to buy it, it is great value and a work of art.

Enjoy bugs anytime

The information in this book is well written and useful but what I truly enjoy are the photographs. They are excellent. Absolutely excellent. And the quality of the the print (Italy I think) is top shelf. Now, if you are a fly tier who would like a better look at the little bugs we try to imitate that will make this book even better. I am trying new ideas on old fly patterns jut to see if I can bring them a little closer to the real thing. Tight Lines

Why I, a Christian, light candles for Hanukkah

Kevin Geoffrey is one of my favorite Messianic authors. He's a down-to-earth, practice-what-you-preach Bible scholar. He is a teacher, who is honest and says it like it is; and He loves the Lord with all his heart, mind and soul.

As Hanukkah approaches each year, I get this book out to keep the Festival of Lights in the proper perspective. As a Christian, I celebrate Hanukkah because Jesus did (See John 10:22) & "as a remembrance that even against overwhelming evil, it is both a privilege and our responsibility to fight for God's sake."

Hannukah is not the Jewish counterpart to Christmas, it is the story of many deaths & atrocities as Antiochus IV unleashed his anger upon the Jews. He wanted one religion & determined that the Jews forget who they were. Thus he could rule the world. He even took on the title of "God Manifest," thus proclaiming himself as diety. But a small band of Jewish freedom fighters faced armies 13 times their size & strength thus smashing Antiochus' rule & re-establishing Israeli independence in 168 BC.

Present day Israel still struggles to keep their independence. Hannukah is a reminder of a long difficult Israeli history, but also is a cry to re-dedication ourselves to serve the Messiah.

100 pages to teach the true meaning of Hanukkah plus 18 pages of additional notes makes this small book a potential life changer. Whether Christian, Jew or Messianic, this book is a must read each December.

Pretty good

Author needs to answer the cosmic "why" of the mention in Yochanan (John) 10, of the feast of dedication. ALL Scripture is inspired and given for a reason, down to the smallest yod (jot). This, I believe, would satisfy the arguments on both sides of the Yeshua-in-Chanukah debate.

I like the idea that Chanukah should serve as both a memorial - and I add, to ALL Jews and Christians alike, who have died for their faith in HaShem/Yeshua and His Torah - and as a call to our own re-dedication to obedient faith in HaShem/Yeshua and His Torah.

I would add... I, for one, unlike the author, apparently, DO believe in the miracle of the oil. And in that I see the promise that G-d is with (and ultimately rewards) those who faithfully keep His faith and Torah, even until the end of the age. [I am curious: Why does the author trust the historicity/veracity of the apocryphal books of the Macabees but not that of the Talmud's recounting?]

Excellent Read

Concise, well-though-out, clearly articulated explanation of what Chanukah is, isn't and can be. I didn't feel like the author had an agenda of which to convince me. Just presented the information in small sections making it easy to read. Lots of documentation and end notes. I highly recommend it.

Inspiration for all wives!

Although there are many decent books about Christian sexuality, J wanted to offer women a book about sexuality written as though it was a conversation over a cup of coffee. I remember a certain married friend pulling me aside during my wedding reception in order to educate me on the specifics of how to perform oral sex; although it was slightly uncomfortable and slightly exciting, I appreciated a friend giving me tips because it gave me a little confidence that new things weren't scary things. This book is like that conversation. It's a little uncomfortable in a good way and a little exciting and a little creativity-inducing. If I could sum it up in a few words: it's a fun "idea book".

I read J's book while cooking dinner in about two days. It's a super-fast, easy, short read. Because most of the chapters are derived directly from her blog posts, each chapter is short and to the point. The topics are deceivingly basic: kissing techniques, how to perform oral sex, how to give a hand job, scheduling sex, considering sexual positions, choosing locations for sex, and what exactly to do with hands, legs, mouth and legs. There are also several chapters devoted to common questions: how to handle a low-drive husband, what to do when sex is painful, and what to do if your husband isn't the romantic type. I also appreciated that J addresses how the gospel applies in the bedroom and calls the church to address sexuality in a more effective manner (especially given how beserk our society's moral culture has become).

Although I initially thought the topics looked too basic for anyone other than a newlywed, I have to say I was surprised. What this book did was to get my creative juices flowing - it got me thinking more about sex with my husband. I think many women could relate to me when I say that it's sometimes really hard to flip a switch from being Mommy to being Hottie Erotic Wife. It has been helpful to try to remember to actually think about having sex when my husband isn't home so that when he does get home, I'm ready. This book did that for me, and I think that most of you will get some ideas from Sex Savvy.

Practical and God honoring

I loved, loved, loved this book! This book is very practical with a lot of specifics and is also very God-honoring with references to scripture. J. Parker is very funny but she also writes with love and wisdom. I will be reading it more than once.

There is a lovely section at the beginning about love letters. There is also help with kissing, sexual positions, and ways to use your body while making love. If you want to know more about how to connect with your mate both spiritually and physically then this is the book for you!

Exactly what I was looking for

I was searching for a book that discussed all the practical sex issues and addressed the biblical perspective in a straightforward manner. I have read many other books that either gloss over the nitty gritty details or are too vague on whether it's right/wrong. I was sick of reading "you and your husband have to decide what you feel comfort with with". How am I supposed to know what I feel comfortable with if I don't know the opposing arguments?!! This book was exactly what I was looking for. Whatever the sex issue I had I was able to flip to that chapter and quickly read the detailed descriptions of "how to" or the information I needed to make my own informed opinion.
Thank you Parker for writing in a way that didn't make me feel awkward for asking and left me feeling informed and excited for intimacy.
