About the Author

Steve Bell began his career in the early 1980s as an accountant, where he learned to appreciate the underlying information and systems needed to run a business. When IBM introduced the first PC, he joined the world of IT at the very beginning of the ERP industry evolution.

He first became acquainted with Lean principles and practices in the early 1990s, when he quickly realized that the key to creating effective IT systems was engaging employees in the simplification and continuous improvement of business processes before investing in information systems. He applied this philosophy to ERP and software development projects, which led to his first book, Lean Enterprise Systems (Wiley, 2006).

The success of this book led him more deeply into the practice of Lean IT, where he began facilitating kaizen events and strategy deployment initiatives, while integrating Agile software development and IT Service management with the fundamental Lean principles. This led to his second book, Lean IT (Productivity Press, 2010), which received the 2011 Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence research award.

Steve serves on the faculty of the Lean Enterprise Institute. He travels worldwide presenting workshops, leading gemba walks, and advising clients on applying Lean IT principles and practices to solve their daily business challenges, including fast and effective governance and portfolio management, continual IT service improvement, end-to-end application development lifecycle management, ERP agility and continuous improvement, and the design of effective measurement systems that help teams focus on the right things.

In addition to his work leading Lean IT transformation, Steve and his wife Karen are actively involved in the nonprofi t and nongovernmental organization (NGO) community. As founders of Lean4NGO (http://www.Lean4NGO.org), their mission is to bring Lean practices to humanitarian aid organizations, improving operational efficiency (use of scarce resources) and effectiveness (improved outcomes) to benefit the three billion people living at the bottom of the pyramid on less than $2 a day.

Steve Bell's "Run Grow Transform" - More than just Lean IT
By J. Winther
The best book available about Lean IT! I suggest that anyone interested in the topic reads this book because it adds that often missing dimension to it: how is the organization actually going to make this work?

So it is not a book about the main ideas of Lean - or IT. Steve obviously assumed that most people by now have an understanding of Lean Thinking and that the readers most likely already know something (enough) about IT. Therefore (I guess), he decided to tell you about how to make use of this knowledge.

Maybe I should mention that this review has been on the way for a long time. But this is such a book where I feel that it deserves a carefully written review, making clear for everyone what makes this book special - and good.

THE SCOPE

I am happy to see that Steve is not painting up the usual "three steps to heaven" or "10 things to do as a leader", as is common for books about management philosophies.

Steve actually points out right away, in the first few lines of the book: There is no "IT Value" separate from business value. And there is limited business value separate from IT.

As simple as that! The remaining book is dedicated to teaching you what that means for your way of dealing with IT in your organization. How you can make it work.

And who are you? You are a leader or manager, but not just for IT, you could be any kind of leader anywhere in your organization - which in turn could be any organization, but maybe mostly one of those which are not the smallest. After all, small companies usually find their own ways of doing things and will be less tempted to follow the guidelines of a business coach.

But if you are, for instance, the IT manager or any line manager or senior manager of a small company, I suggest that you read the book anyway, as it will give you a lot of inspiration for constructing your way of doing things, based on a modern paradigm.

Larger companies often need this inspiration more, because each leader or manager there, next to dealing with his/her own areas of responsibility, also needs to understand and deal with the big whole - and the inspiration from a coach who have seen how many other companies have done that will provide them with years of added experience in the time it takes to read a book.

THE CONCEPT

First of all, processes and value streams run across the organisation, so in order to make them work well, you should arrange cross-organizational teams for analyzing and improving the value streams. And for the IT topics to improve, combined developer and operator teams, DevOps, will do the effort better and easier.

So we speak about cooperation across former silos internally in the IT department and across silos in the organisation.

Steve provides a lot of good comments and guidelines on how to do this, and he has generously added real life stories all the way through the book, illustrating various important points.

He gets into topics like leadership and management style, how and what to measure, and the importance of people and learning.

In order to bring you closer to a starting point for you specific Lean IT journey, the book also has a number of chapters about specific topics, skillfully written by some of the main experts in each respective area:
◾Lean Enterprise Architecture
◾Lean and Business Process Management
◾Lean IT Service Management
◾Lean ERP
◾Lean Software Development
◾Lean Data Management
◾Lean Business Intelligence

THE VALUE

The main differences from a typical book about Lean is its experience based realism - the fact that you start working with Lean IT will not over-night change your organization into one that is four times better. But various advantages can be found in the different steps you can take: you can improve the way things work, give better service, get faster to market with new services, etc., by learning from this experience-packed book.

It will get you started, but it will not fool you into believing that by simply reading one book you are done will all the work.

If you are willing to start a personal journey of understanding what it takes to get the benefit of Lean in relations to IT - how to utilize ideas, tools, and techniques in combination with a better understanding of the effects different actions across the organization have on the combined outcome for all customers on the way, including the end customer - then start with this book.

But be prepared to spend a little more time than what is usual for management books. Steve Bell is both an experienced expert and a skilled coach, so he delivers both knowledge by example and... questions! There are many things for you to consider while reading the book, and this will bring you out on the other side with a renewed understanding of your own knowledge and the real needs of your organization.

A Grab Bag of Many Useful Ideas on Lean and IT Management
By Bradford L. Power
This is a wide-ranging examination of a variety of topics related to the intersection of Lean Thinking and IT Management:
- What is Lean: a useful summary of the latest thinking and practices of "Lean" (Author Steve Bell is a learner, and he shares best practices in the evolving body of knowledge in Lean and related management frameworks, tools, and techniques.)
- How does Lean thinking and practice apply to IT management: software development (a process), data management, IT operations management (Several other authors who are experts in these IT management fields share views on how Lean relates to them. Steve Bell introduces the book's title theme: Run, Grow, Transform - how IT should be looking at its activities to enable the business's mission.)
- How can IT play in Lean transformation and Lean Management: a future vision of a more integrated role for the IT function in the delivery of products and service to customers. (An explanation of value streams and IT's increasingly important role.)

Run Grow Transform - How IT can better drive better business results using Lean principles
By David P. Soule
Lean management practices have been very successful in manufacturing and more recently in financial services and health care. Steven Bell's book does a great job of applying Lean principles to IT to drive business results that count.

Steve provides a concise and clear review of Lean principles with IT related examples and then offers more detailed discussions on how these may be applied to the IT value chain. Additional contributors give impactful examples of using Lean principles in specific areas including code development, running the IT engine, and data management.

The discussion of Enterprise Architecture gives a new perspective that business leaders and IT architects can use to drive a more integrated approach.

This is a must read book for both IT leaders new to Lean principles and those with significant experience.

Jungle Tales, by Horacio Quiroga

Jungle Tales (Cuentos de la Selva) is a collection of eight short stories by Uruguayan writer and naturalist Horacio Quiroga that was published to enormous success in 1918. To this day children in elementary schools across all Latin America read this book as a part of their curriculum.

In these stories, Horacio Quiroga captures the magic of the jungle, which is the scene of great and exciting adv
entures illuminated by nature in all its splendor. A place where snakes throw glamorous parties with flamingoes, stingrays join forces to fight off man-eating jaguars, and a giant tortoise carries a wounded man on its shell for hundreds of kilometers to bring him to safety.

Jungle Tales expands the spectrum of literature for English speaking kids and teenagers and introduce them to new cultures and a different way of seeing the world.

This book is enchanting for both children and adults, with high-quality paper, an engaging design and most important of all, original full-color illustrations by artistic genius Bert Van Wijk, whose wonderful work you can see here: http://www.bertvanwijk.com/

Publishing Jungle Tales has been possible thanks to the invaluable support of many people and funded through Kickstarter.

This book made me happy as a kid.
By Gabriel Valjan
I was as excited the morning I read Jeff Zorrilla's translation of Horacio Quiroga's slim volume of Jungle Tales or Cuentos de la selva (1918). Natalia Cortesi and Jeff Zorrilla, knowing that generations of Spanish-speaking children read these Tales in the classroom, developed the idea of providing English-readers with both a translation and an illustrated book -- more on the illustrations in a moment.

Jungles Tales is an octet of brief but entertaining short stories with subtle lessons and themes perfect for children. Friendship and alliances are Quiroga's prevalent themes in the Tales. The author was known for darker stories, but here he is lighter and mischievous. There is some violence but none of it is disturbing. The mastery of Quiroga's storytelling is in how seamless his narratives unfold, how he creates his animal worlds using spare but poetic metaphors. If Quiroga had any bias in these tales, it seems that he did not like jaguars. `Giant Tortoise' is a tale of unexpected compassion and reciprocity between a man and, you guessed it, a giant tortoise. `Flamingo Stockings' is a hilarious party with a misunderstanding that ultimately explains why flamingos have red legs and why they like to hang out in the water. If only Quiroga had explained why the kneecaps are on backwards on the birds! `The Bald Parrot' is a cautionary tale of a naive tea-loving parrot named Perdito. `The Alligator War' is about the consequences of youth not respecting wisdom, about defending `home'; it's Quiroga being his most explicit about Man against Nature. `The Blind Doe' is maternal love, healing, and friendships. You can discover the remaining three stories about coati cubs, a river of stingrays, and a lazy bee on your own.

Bert van Wijk illustrated this edition with handsome animal drawings and vibrant colors of red, orange, yellow, and green. The font is especially readable and I particularly enjoyed the layout on the page. Quiroga's exposition is spaced nicely apart, with the dialog grouped together, which is ideal for the reading parent and child to share together, or for a teacher and student reading in the classroom. Cortesi and Zorrilla have also provided the reader in either language, English or Spanish, with an illustrated glossary for the numerous animals within Jungle Tales. I had not known what a tatú carreta or a surbí were (giant armadillo and tiger-striped catfish). The very last page offers a map of Quiroga's Misiones. I'd like to add that this edition would assist the advanced-beginner student of Spanish literature and language; it makes for a wonderful introduction to the Uruguayan writer, one of the greats who has been compared to Edgar Allan Poe and whom Roberto Bolaño listed as first in his list of must-read writers.

For those who do read Spanish and for others wanting a taste of Quiroga's descriptive powers (and humor), I alternate the opening sentences of `The Flamingos' Stockings,' presenting it first in Quiroga's original, then in Jeff Zorilla's translation.

[One day the snakes held a grand ball. They invited the frogs and the toads, and the flamingos, and the alligators and the fish. The fish, because they can't walk, weren't able to dance; but because the ball was held on the riverbank, they would hop up onto the sand and clap along with their tales.]

[The alligators, in order to look their best, put on banana necklaces and smoked their best Paraguayan cigars. The toads glued scales over their bodies and wiggled around on the dance floor as if they were swimming. And each time that they passed, very serious, along the riverbank, the fish would shout and make fun of them.]

Las ranas se habían perfumado todo el cuerpo, y caminaban en dos pies. Además, cada una llevaba colgando como un farolito, una luciérnaga que se balanceaba.

[The frogs put on lots of cologne and walked on two feet. And each one carried a firefly that hung swinging like a little lantern.]

My only quibble was one blank page between stories (page 59). I wished that Natalia Cortesi and Jeff Zorrilla had offered me a paragraph or two about their background or inspiration for this edition. They offer a brief Prologue to introduce Quiroga to the reader and they graciously acknowledge all their supporters at Kickstarter. My complaint is minor, though.

Norman Thomas Di Giovanni, Edith Grossman, the late Edwin Honig, and Gregory Rabassa are translators of Hispanic literature I admire, but I'm grateful that Natalia Cortesi, Jeff Zorilla, and the numerous patrons at Kickstarter have given readers this Quiroga gem. I'd like to hear that American students are reading this in our classrooms. This book made me happy as a kid. Priceless.

I'd been working late, missed the last bus, and there wasn't a cab in sight. And just my luck, it started to rain. So there I was, hoofing it down the street in the dark, trying to keep the rain off my head with a manila file folder and wishing I'd told my boss to f--k off when he'd told me to work late. Then a cab turned down the street, and I thought my luck had changed. It had, but not in the way I anticipated.

Warning: This audiobook contains very explicit sex including gangbang sex, sex at a BDSM club, rough sex, submissive sex, spanking, and more.

Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures, Second Edition (Civil Engineering - Advisors), by Cliff Gerwick

The leading authority in the field offers a unique and comprehensive treatment of the construction aspects of offshore structures, rather than the more commonly addressed design considerations. Extensively updated, this second edition provides a new chapter on extending offshore technologies to inland waterways and emphasizes recent advances-including floating structures, deep-water structures, ice-resistant structures, and bridge foundations. Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures details all the particulars of building in a marine environment, including construction equipment, marine operations, installing piles, pipelines, and cables, steel and concrete offshore platforms, and underwater repairs.

Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures provides an essential reference to engineers in the oil and service industries and to marine construction planners, designers, and contractors.

New in the second edition:

  • How the physical environment and geotechnical conditions affect construction
  • Increased attention to protecting the natural environment and compliance with regulatory provisions
  • Recent developments in positioning, instrumentation, and underwater inspection, plus a new section on concrete and steel floating structures and installing permanent moorings
  • Expanded treatment of deep water bridge piers as well as locks and dams on major rivers.

The only marine and offshore construction book you need
    By Christopher Miller
This book is FULL of information, interesting, readable, and explanatory. This book takes a long time to get through though, which I suppose is great value. The following are the chapters:

    1. Physical Environmental Aspects

    2. Geotechnical Aspects (Seafloor)

    3. Ecological and Societal Impacts

    4. Materials and Fabrication (Structures)

    5. Construction Equipment (Vessels)

    6. Marine Operations

    7. Seafloor Modifications and Improvements

    8. Installation of Piles

    9. Harbor, River, and Estuary Structures

    10. Coastal Structures

    11. Steel Jackets

    12. Concrete Gravity-Base Structures

    13. Other Applications of Offshore Construction Technology

    14. Moored Floating Structures

    15. Pipeline Installation

    16. Plastic and Composite Pipelines, Cables

    17. Topside Installation

    18. Underwater Repairs

    19. Strengthening Existing Structures

    20. Removal and Salvage

    21. Constructability

    22. Deep Sea Construction

    23. Arctic Structures

The first three chapters provide excellent background information. Chapters 4-6 are more specific but still general enough to be required reading. The remaining chapters are for you to choose which are most applicable to your company's operations. I don't think any one company actually does all the types of work this book covers, but it's still good to have the introductory knowledge. (Note topside fabrication, which albeit is accomplished on a quayside, is not discussed.) The chapter on constructability is a more recent and important topic.

A competitive advantage is technical knowledge (or at least awareness) of the many different methodologies to achieve satisfactory execution, and this book describes many of them in marine and offshore construction. It is a must read for operations and project engineers, construction supervision, planners/schedulers, and even project managers.
