Human beings are not model epistemic citizens. Our reasoning can be careless and uncritical, and our beliefs, desires, and other attitudes aren't always as they ought rationally to be. Our beliefs can be eccentric, our desires irrational and our hopes hopelessly unrealistic. Our attitudes are influenced by a wide range of non-epistemic or non-rational factors, including our character, our emotions, and powerful unconscious biases. Yet we are rarely conscious of such
influences. Self-ignorance is not something to which human beings are immune.

In this book Quassim Cassam develops an account of self-knowledge which tries to do justice to these and other respects in which humans aren't model epistemic citizens. He rejects rationalist and other mainstream philosophical accounts of self-knowledge on the grounds that, in more than one sense, they aren't accounts of self-knowledge for humans. Instead he defends the view that inferences from behavioural and psychological evidence are a basic source of human self-knowledge. On this account,
self-knowledge is a genuine cognitive achievement and self-ignorance is almost always on the cards.

As well as explaining knowledge of our own states of mind, Cassam also accounts for what he calls 'substantial' self-knowledge, including knowledge of our values, emotions, and character. He criticizes philosophical accounts of self-knowledge for neglecting substantial self-knowledge, and concludes with a discussion of the value of self-knowledge.

This book tries to do for philosophy what behavioural economics tries to do for economics. Just as behavioural economics is the economics of homo sapiens, as distinct from the economics of an ideally rational and self homo economics, so Cassam argues that philosophy should focus on the human predicament rather than on the reasoning and self-knowledge of an idealized homo philosophicus.

Quassim Cassam is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick. He was previously Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge, and has also taught at Oxford and UCL. A fascinating feature is that a fairy tale type story is embedded throughout. Each adventure the protagonist has is a metaphorical example of didactic principles being taught. This isn’t meant to trip you up only to trip you out to bridge confusion to learning. Thus, the book is purposely “whole brained” in it’s approach. Even so, the reader can skip over the story sections and jump right into the “meat” of the book.

Books are available for the smaller population of well-trained musicians well schooled in music theory. These are often difficult (conservatory level) and not fun. To many fairy tales in a music composing tutorial book.

Have to say there are too many fairy tales in this book, and the "real stuff" is pretty short. One quick example, It takes 27% of the contents to end the long, nearly useless prefaces, forewards and introductions. If you are a well-educated musician or some amateur want to get serious, skip this book and save your money for a better one.

Get up and running!

As a composer and teacher of composition, this book is invaluable. It covers a ton of useful information, and does so in a concise and very easy to understand manner. Each new topic is presented and thoroughly prepares you for the next step. I have already used it with one student who made tremendous progress just over the weekend. The clear explanations of how melodies and harmonies are related is brilliant, and got my student to experiment with triads, inversions, seventh chords, and ninth chords in her melody harmonizations: a new world was opened up for her. Her music jumped off of the page and came to life thanks to the confidence, new ideas and harmonic vocabulary that this book imparted in a short time. Many thanks to Todd Rice for putting this book together! I look forward to using it with many of my students.

Very good addition to your lean library

+ Good use of references using solid, reliable sources
+ Explains misconceptions of western interpreation of the word, "standard"
+ Solid summary chapter at the end
+ A3 building exercises for the reader is a novel approach, thumbs up
+ Practical advice
+ Good examples of A3s
+ Appreciated the honesty glimpses of the realities of Toyota as a global, multinational company, even if they were small or only hinted at
+ A decent section on the "digital" vs. "paper" debate
+ Describes some elements of good or proper visuals (e.g. Tufte section on proper display of analytics)
+ Changes the way I will forever ask (and give) updates on projects

Con:
- By far the largest issue is the repetitious nature of the material. Chapters 3, 4, 5 could have perhaps been best presented as one with notes describing key differences. As is, I think the repetition has a tendency to hide and demphasize differences and key points.
- Fig 6.2 and related description seems to have some serious issues, whether it is message, erroneous, or other I cannot yet say
- Some jargon (e.g. "spinning your wheels") that will not translate easily if you are not American

Neutral:
> 5 Whys was not deeply described and maybe borders in my opinion on an incorrect description, although in fairness to the authors this is not the focus of the book
> Heavy use of "at Toyota" (which is on the cover) so if this is a turnoff, please note that "Toyota" shows up in here quite a bit

Bottom line: Recommended for everyone. Despite cons, easily in my top 5 lean/excellence books.

Pretty good introduction. Very actionable advice and tips. Nevertheless, I would only recommend it if you have read The Toyota Way, Learning to See and/or similar books on Lean beforehand. Something else to know is that this book, like the others mentioned, focus on manufacturing. You will have to translate the concepts to your domain (e.g. Software in my case)

Outstanding reference work of the logic and mechanics of creating A3's. Covered are 3 variants: 1) Problem Solving A3's, 2) Proposal A3's, and 3) Status A3's.

The authors present a refreshingly pragmatic approach to helping improvement teams and leaders to drive communication, scientific method thinking and organizational alignment for improvement. Clearly building on the A3 heritage of Toyota...the focus is on the thought process and not on one correct format. " ...like snowflakes, no two A3's are alike."

Six Sigma professionals will recognize many elements (both existing and omitted) of DMAIC thinking in the PDCA format of the A3. For today's challenging business cycle, the A3 approach can offer faster, less bureaucratic results, building on more frequent cycles of learning through revision than DMAIC.
