A fun but distressingly quick walk through the field of computer science

I wanted to love this book. The description reminds me strongly of the fictional Young Lady's Illustrated Primer from Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age, and I'm a big fan of anything that attempts to teach people more about computer science, especially anything aimed at younger readers.

As a computer scientist myself, this was a fun read. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, but I didn't expect to. The storyline that glues everything together is moderately fun, albeit a bit simple and unsurprising. The explanations of algorithms are quite good, and fairly easy to understand. My problem with the book, however, is that it doesn't seem to know who it is targeting.

As an introduction to computer science for a child or young adult, the book progresses far too quickly through the topics, covering a lot of material in a very short time. It goes over each concept just once, leaving far too many things assumed, and provides no time for revision and absorption before moving on to the next topic. As a book for older readers, the language and storyline are very basic and straightforward, which leaves me wondering just who the target audience are.

Fleshed out and improved, this book would make a marvelous introductory text for young people interested in learning about computer science. As it is, though, the book suffers in a no-man's-land between educational and entertaining, making it difficult to determine who would benefit from reading it.

I'm not a Computer Scientist

I'm not a Computer Scientist. I've heard the phrase Computer Science bandied about in general conversations but when push came to shove I really didn't know what it meant. I now know that a large part of computer science is organizing data in such a way that it is easy to store and easy to access. The author is able to introduce the uninitiated to a glimpse of Computational Science. He does this by introducing us to Princess Ann who takes us on an adventure through the kingdom ruled by her father, King Fredrick. The kingdom is facing a crisis and the King's daughter has been charged with the mission of saving the realm. The book is likeable and funny as she faces different characters and situations along the way. Each character and situation progresses through concepts of data collection and dissemination. Each situation shows that data can be collected in different ways to suit the needs of the collector and that the data can be disseminated in many different ways, again to supply results to the user in the most efficient way. The author has been able to take the mystery out of many computational concepts that novices to the science and curious readers may find otherwise daunting.

As a 13 year old, the target audience, I loved this book. I learned a ton of stuff from it. The author provides easy to understand examples to would-be complex ideas. I would recommend this book to anyone reading this right now...

About the Author
Bernard J. Mullin, PhD, is currently president and chief executive officer of Atlanta Spirit, LLC. In this role he is in charge of guiding all facets of the Spirit's operations, including overseeing all team and business operations for the NBA's Hawks and NHL's Thrashers and management of the world-class Philips Arena.

Mullin has nearly 30 years of experience in the sport management industry, involving executive positions with professional teams and leagues where he specializes in start-ups and turnarounds, breaking numerous all-time league ticket sales and attendance records. Before coming to Atlanta, Mullin served as the NBA's senior vice president of marketing and team business operations. Mullin has also served as president and general manager of a minor league hockey team, the IHL's Denver Grizzlies; senior vice president of business operations for the Colorado Rockies; and senior vice president of business for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has also acted as the owner's representative on major design and construction projects, including Coors Field and University of Denver's award-winning athletic facilities.

Before and during his career in professional sports, Mullin spent several years in intercollegiate athletics and higher education. He served as vice chancellor of athletics for the University of Denver and as professor of sport management at the University of Massachusetts. Mullin holds a PhD in business, an MBA, and an MS in marketing from the University of Kansas, where he coached the varsity soccer program, and a BA business studies from Coventry University in England, where he played soccer semiprofessionally for the Oxford City Football Club.

Stephen Hardy, PhD, is professor of kinesiology and coordinator of the sport studies program at the University of New Hampshire, where he is also an affiliate professor of history. At UNH since 1988, he serves as faculty representative to the NCAA and chairs the president's Athletics Advisory Committee. In 2003-2004, he served as interim vice provost for undergraduate studies.

Hardy has also taught at the University of Massachusetts (where he earned his PhD), the University of Washington, Robert Morris College, and Carnegie Mellon University. Over three decades, he has taught courses in sport marketing, athletic administration, and sport history, as well as a popular introduction to the sport industry. Besides Sport Marketing, his publications include How Boston Played (1982, 2003) and numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews in academic presses. His reviews and opinions have also appeared in popular outlets such as the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and the Sports Business Journal. From 1995 to 1999, he was coeditor of the Sport Marketing Quarterly. In 1997, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. In May 2001, he won the Lifetime Research Award from UNH's School of Health and Human Services.

Hardy has extensive experience in college athletics. He played hockey for Bowdoin in the late 1960s and cocaptained the 1969-70 team with his twin brother, Earl. After coaching stints at Vermont Academy and Amherst College, he joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1976, where he served as assistant commissioner and hockey supervisor until 1979. During this time, he supervised collegiate championships in venues such as the Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden, and he worked closely with the NCAA Ice Hockey Committee and its affiliated championships. He served on the board of directors of the America East Athletic Conference from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, he was selected by the Hockey East Association as one of 20 special friends to celebrate the league's 20th anniversary.

William A. Sutton, EdD, currently serves as a professor and associate department head for the DeVos Sport Business Management graduate program at the University of Central Florida. In addition to his duties at UCF, Dr. Sutton is the founder and principal of Bill Sutton & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing and revenue enhancement. Before assuming his current positions, Dr. Sutton served as vice president of team marketing and business operations for the National Basketball Association and has held academic appointments at Robert Morris University, Ohio State University, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

In addition to Sport Marketing, Dr. Sutton is a coauthor of Sport Promotion and Sales Management. He has also authored more than 100 articles and has made more than 100 national and international presentations. Dr. Sutton is a past president of NASSM and a founding member of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA) and Sport Marketing Quarterly, where he has also served as coeditor. Dr. Sutton is a featured author for Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal (SBJ) and for the basketball strategy and business magazines Basketball Gigante and FIBA Assist published in Italy.

Dr. Sutton's professional experience includes service as a special events coordinator for the City of Pittsburgh, a YMCA director, vice president of information services for an international sport marketing firm, commissioner of the Mid-Ohio Conference, and cofounder and principal of the consulting firm Audience Analysts. Dr. Sutton received his BA, MS, and EdD from Oklahoma State University, where he was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame in 2003. Dr. Sutton is also an inaugural member of the Robert Morris University Sport Management Hall of Fame (2006).

The ONLY book worth having as a sport marketer!

If your job is to sell sports, you MUST own this book. Otherwise, you're just a sports wannabe who is constantly guessing about what works and what doesn't. It is the only book that shows you guaranteed ways to build sustainable attendance figures. It shows how factors such as your facility, your promotion efforts, location, pricing, and product relate with each other to provide an overall experience for your customers.

Good Information, Poor Editing

The contents of this book cover important topics for PCB layout designers. The material is well organized and adequately (but briefly) discussed. The below comments are based on the first release I purchased at a discount from the author, and may not reflect accurately on later releases.

Unfortunately, the readability of the book suffers from poor review and editing prior to printing. There are many dozens of typographical errors, and poorly structured sentences. Additionally, the index is out of synchronization with the pages in the book, and you must mentally subtract thirteen (13) from any listed index page number to reach the actual page where the referenced material can be found.

I found the "Tom and Bob" imagined discussions used to highlight various issues a bit juvenile for what should be a scholarly work on PCB design theory. I suspect the author was trying to keep the material from being too "dry". However, I think most technicians and engineers who might use this book are looking for a reference and not light reading.

An impressive amount of material has been compressed into a short book. However, there are some misunderstood and misused PCB design methods that were not covered. For example, I would like to have seen sections on the use and misuse of via fences, and copper flooding.

In short - it is a book worth buying for PCB layout designers who are new to the field or have limited experience. However, it should be given to them with warnings about the grammatical errors and index problems.

Excellent Book and Great Attn to Detail

The spectrum of technical books ranges from the theoretical tomes conceived by those with tenure for the "benefit" of the assembled throngs to a highly erudite treatises of obscure technical problems and solutions proven beyond any doubt.

This book is definitely someplace in the middle. It touches on enough theory to form a link to what you might have learned in your first "formative" four years, but beyond that it concentrates heavily on the practical. Obviously written by someone who has been in the "trenches" and had to design things that "worked" under pressures of short schedule and small budget.

Other reviewers point to some of the book's shortcomings, but these are minor annoyances compared to a very helpful manner in which such topics as impedance calculations and power plane and power supply capacitance calculations are covered.

Or the chapter on EMI for those who have to design a product that must pass EMI test.

I would say that the book's greatest utility would be to PCB designers, engineers and even project managers who find themselves in a need to quickly "come up to speed" on the challenges to such board design.

If you are about to hire a design house to layout your high speed board knowing that they know what the book points out as "gotchas" is well worth its price.

It's a book where the author shares "personal experiences" and let's don't forget that engineering experience prevents mistakes which were the source of that experience in the first place

I'm glad I found this for my grandchild

Used these when I first started homeschooling back almost 20 years ago! I wish they updated them for the new generation! I'm glad I found this for my grandchild. They have a chart in the beginning of each week. I used that to find other homeschool materials (board games, computer programs, recipes, books, etc) that matched what we would be studying that week.

Very good place to start!

I have a 4 and 5 year old. I bought this to assist my four year old in learning her letters and basics as well as prepare/supplement my 5 year old for kidergarten. I found the material to be a little elemetary for my 5 year old, he seems to get bored if we do not move quickly, however he does enjoy the various activity ideas in the book. This book seems to be exactly what I was looking for in helping my 4year old though, she is very eager to learn with this as my guide. Two complaints: One, the pages will need to be copies prior to working them. This is not only due to the fact that I am using one book for two children but because they have cut/paste pages on the backs of regular pages and therefore you will have to cut up a perfectly good page on the back to do such an activity. Two, is that there should be a list of recommended items for each week. You need to pre-read the lesson plans for each week well in advance so that you have time to collect items needed (such as books, etc.). I ran into this problem my first week, traveling to the library for reading books, trying to find replacements when those weren't available and purchasing butcher paper for an activity. Overall, this is a great place to start. One other minor complaint is that the entire weeks lesson of science is usually geared toward a season, so if you are not following the typical school schedule (aug-may) your child will be learning about autumn in summer. You will need to adjust some of the the lessons to fit you and your child but as someone very new to homeschooling I am grateful for the planned out lessons and activity ideas. Just wish there was a list or recommended items, such as books, for each week to reduce prep time.

Only useful if you have a large library

I bought the book for my 4 yr old son, we're going to home school and thought I'd do a little trial run this year. Already the majority of the book is too easy for him. He doesn't mind doing the projects but nearly every page has to be photocopied, which means I spend quite a chunk of time at the computer scanning and printing. And forget finding the hundreds of books that they list. We live in a very small town with a library that has nothing for kids books, so I go to the next town over and even there I only found 2 of the books they had listed for their first two weeks of instruction. Very frustrating. If you have a huge library I think it'd be a great book.

About the Author

Peter H. Westfall is the Paul Whitfield Horn Professor of Statistics and James Niver Professor of Information Systems and Quantitative Sciences at Texas Tech University. A Fellow of the ASA and the AAAS, Dr. Westfall has published several books and over 100 papers on statistical theory and methods. He also has won several teaching awards and is the former editor of The American Statistician. He earned a PhD in statistics from the University of California, Davis.

Kevin S.S. Henning is a clinical assistant professor of business analysis in the Department of Economics and International Business at Sam Houston State University, where he teaches business statistics and forecasting. He earned a PhD in business statistics from Texas Tech University.

This is a interesting book because it presents advanced statistics differently from any other stats book I have read. This is not a bad thing, since it makes you look at problems differently. Overall though, quite a good read.

He has an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and passed all parts of the CPA exam the first time he took it with an almost perfect score. Tim Elkins, Chad's Father, has his own CPA practice in Texas, which he started after retiring from the Inspector General's Office of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Before retiring from government service, he was assigned to a special team that audited the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Loved this book!

Loved this book! I am a big fan of sketching and hand drawing over computer programs. While I do understand the importance of computers in design, I also understand the importance of being able to sketch out an idea on the fly and learning to see in a new way, especially for a visual industry. Sketching has almost becoming a lost art, and this book is perfect for students, design professionals, as well as those who just want to learn to sketch and see things in a new light.

The book is broken up into 3 chapters (furniture + lighting, interiors, architecture) with multiple drawing techniques in each chapter that emphasize the process. With it’s simple approach, easy to follow instructions and plenty of drawing examples, I wish this book would have been available when I was in school instead of the wordy, technical books that were available. It’s a visual book, for a visual concept that is done beautifully.

Demystifying the process of sketching

This is a wonderful book for the person who would like to learn how to sketch. For most, the act of drawing or sketching is a bit intimidating. Stephanie's book demystifies the process and breaks it down into step-by-step "chunks" that are quite manageable. Many will find this book approachable, easy to use and understand since it’s free of jargon or technical know-how. The book is also very well organized; the exercises begin by looking at small-scaled objects (such as chairs) and simple studies to large buildings as well as interiors that tackle more complex views (such as perspectives). Each little assignment provides clear instructions as well as stated objectives. Explanations are given to provide answers to the questions “Why?” and “How?” these exercises help develop a new way of seeing objects, shadows, light and contrast.
I would highly recommend the book to the beginning design student AND to the person who's just always been interested in picking up a pencil and a sketchbook to learn draw.

Taught in a simple and easy to understand manner

[[VIDEOID:36f5ec8809826aa061506dd468e4d6bf]]This is a great book for architecture students, sketchers and those who want to develop the skill of sketching. It's a 128-page paperback written by Stephanie Travis who teaches interior architecture and design.

The book collects lots of useful tips on sketching. You'll need observational drawing skills to get the most out of the book. Many of the examples require you to draw what you see. There's not so much of constructing objects from imagination. The main drawing tools used are markers and the fine, medium and thick stroke pens.

Earlier chapters focuses on the basic fundamentals and simple techniques that are used in the later chapters. There are techniques to help you present your drawings more clearly, lessons on perspective, exercises on positive and negative style of drawing, how to render textures and many more. The exercises are short and easy to follow.

The underlying concept is the process is more important than the end result itself. Through drawing, you'll learn more about the subject that you have drawn.

Overall, it's quite an insightful book with plenty of useful techniques. It's a good book for beginners.
