WELL YOU CAN'T SATISFY EVERYONE --

I found the story light hearted and naive, just like the young ladies of that era. Yes many time they act silly [in our views] but at least Charity Emerson was not a whiney, fainty kind of girl at 18.

Simon "Devil" Dure has inherited the Earldom on the death of his brother [never quite explained] but is protecting his emotions from being ravaged again by love. He blames himself for the death of his young wife but now must procure an heir.

He is on the verge of offering for Selena Emerson, the eldest of the Emerson girls who happens to love a lowly reverand. Not the marriage to the pastor, her mother, Caroline invisions for her. The Emerson's need someone with money in order to bring out the younger girls, Elspeth, Horatia, and Belinda.

I loved the simplicity of Charity's idea of approaching Simon Dure in his own home [which of course, is not done] - Dure is taken aback that this child/woman had the audacity to come to his establishment. He is entrigued by her arguments that he should marry her and not her sister.

She actually brings laughter and amusement into Dure's life. He is finding it hard to adhur to the year long engagement as she unwittingly sends his desire into overdrive. Shall we say that he gets a bit hot around her?

We meet Venetia, his sister who is being blackmailed by Faraday Reed, who considers himself quite a ladies man. And then there is the foolish Mrs. Theodora Graves, who deludes herself that Dure would marry her.

Oh, we can't forget the mutt of a dog, Lucky and guess what Charity brings home? Churchill, the funny little monkey who stirs up a lot of trouble.

Yup! Dure is finding it hard to resist Charity and her kisses and she does take advantage of the man and his weaknesses. She is not afraid to get down and dirty and play with her sisters or seduce Dure.

I don't care for 400 page stories but this just keeps leading you on - couldn't stop reading and was not in a hurry [as in some books] to get to the end.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m You may want to read this one again.

1996 book reissued in 2010 and it shows its age.

I like Candace Camp so I picked up this book. When I got into the story I realized I had read this plot so very many times before in romance novels written by so very many authors. There are even bits in this I've read in old Georgette Heyer books (e.g., the heroine's penchant for rescuing strays, whether they be animals or mistreated children). Now a lot of the books with similar plots have been written since 1996 when this SUDDENLY was first issued so I'm not saying Camp is plagiarizing, by any means. It's just that the plot is so "been-there, done-that". The good thing about this book is that Camp has managed to make this heroine appealing, not annoying, and the hero is, of course, sexy but decent, as we like heroes to be. The villainess, hero's cast-aside mistress, is pretty annoying and predictable, as is the evil rake of a villain. On the whole, however, if one considers the publication date of 1996 it is a satisfactory read. Probably a reader younger than I, who hasn't read so many historical romances, will like this.

Despite the flaws in the storyline, I liked lead's romance

There are a few problems with Candace Camp's novel Suddenly and yet I could not help but like it. This novel was written fourteen years ago, and it shows but there is still something sweet about the romance between the leads.

Charity Emerson loves her sister, Serena, so when her parents try to coerce Serena into a marriage to the Earl of Dure, Charity steps in to save the day. She offers herself to Dure as substitute bride and he is quick to say yes as Charity is beautiful and charming.

Charity is young, only eighteen and she acts like it. She is hopelessly naïve, so much so that she is completely unaware of sinister actions around her. One glaring problem in this plot is both Charity and her mother welcome a married man to call and escort Charity about town. No proper mother would allow her engaged daughter to spend so much time with a married man. Fortunately, some of Charity's naïve actions resolve themselves before the end of the novel.

Charity and Dure agree to a loveless marriage. Dure is still smarting from his first wife's death and does not want to open himself to more heartache but he quickly sees that Charity is determined to bring her sunny disposition to his somewhat staid life.

The middle portion of this novel really slows down and that's because there is little action occurring between Charity and Dure. He keeps his distance emotionally and physically. Meanwhile Charity is bent on defying Dure's commands to stay away from an old enemy. He does not explain his motives at first and this just causes the young Charity to dig in her heels.

The last half of the book is much better. Here the action picks up thanks to secondary characters that fill in many of the blanks for Charity. Finally she sees why Dure's warnings are not just ridiculous demands. Also she matures fairly quickly when her fiancé faces gossip and legal trouble. Charity is at her best when she is fiercely loyal and protective of Dure. Too often heroines are not loyal to the hero, but Charity never wavers in her faith and I immensely admired her character's stalwart belief in her hero.

Dure experiences real joy with Charity. Her sweet, honest nature is refreshing and Ms. Camp does a good job of letting the reader see how much these protagonists like each other. Both leads are at their best when they share scenes, however they are not great detectives and Charity especially is no Nancy Drew. Her lack of discernment really leads her in the wrong directions when hunting for clues.

So even though there are some issues with this novel (Charity's immaturity being one along with a slow middle portion) I still enjoyed it. I liked how Charity really stood her ground when it came to Dure, she was supportive and selfless. The plot of this novel rates around 2.5 stars but Charity's loyalty and Dure's noble nature bump this up to a 4 star read.

The authors, both British art historians, are joined by 12 other experts in this field to present an amazing array of multicultural interpretations of the world as condensed into symbolic images. They define a symbol as "something that a particular culture considers to mean something else." Each entry features a blue line drawing of the symbol in a generalized pictographic style. Although the quantity of images could have been overwhelming, the symbols are extremely well organized into numbered columns that correspond with the alphabetical front index, or "symbol finder." This index is invaluable because the text itself is composed of eight thematic chapters, among them "Heaven and Earth," "Characters and People," and "Objects and Artifacts." Pertinent cultural meanings for the symbols are refreshingly worldwide, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Americas, and the Pacific. Many of the connotations are religious in nature, with referrences ranging from Aztec beliefs to Mesopotamian mythology to major contemporary religions. Since graduating from the Courtauld Institute he has written two books on Renaissance art, and is currently working on a book about the history of the Palace of Westminster. Rowena Shepherd is an art historian currently working for English Heritage. Rachel Kennedy is a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She specializes in the art of the 18th century, and has contributed entries on the symbolism of art to a number of dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Complete Guide to Symbols and Their Meaning

"1000 Symbols" is an extensive compendium of symbols from around the world. What makes this book unique from other books on symbols is the worldwide approach. A specific symbol can mean widely differing things in different cultural contexts and the authors do a wonderful job of examining each interpretation. Each symbol has a number that is cross-referenced to the index at the beginning of the book making them easy to find. In addition, the symbols are categorized into eight general categories for easy browsing. The categories are Heaven and Earth, Characters and People, Body and Actions, Living Creatures, Mythical Beasts, Flowers, Plants and Trees, Objects and Artefacts, and Abstracts. Each of these categories is also subdivided.
Each of the symbols discussed has a line drawing of the symbol along with a detailed description of what the symbol meant to different groups, how it is used today, various ways it was drawn, etc. If you want to know about the various symbols that surround us this is an excellent place to find out. A highly recommended reference for anyone interested in symbols.

I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.

NOT A "PART 2" !!!!!

The only reason I read this book is because I stumbled upon it literally 2 days after reading "Black Reign". This was a continuation of the first book, yet the storyline was completely different. The main character is now Black. & I was just confused as ever because there was wayyyyyy too many characters! I found myself having to flip back pages to remember who was who in the book simply because there was so many names to remember. These names were frequent in almost every paragraph on every page of every chapter in this book. It seemed like EVERYONE in this book was the main character! Very confusing & hard to follow. I really wanted Edd Mcnair to follow up with Angela & Monica's back story & even talk about how she coped after Mac & Damien's death...heck, even Quinn could've been mentioned. Yet...nothing! This definitely wasn't a "Part 2" , this book should've been titled something completely different.

So about the actual storyline... it's VERY hard 2 follow. So only read if you absolutely have nothing else to do!

& 1 last thing, it's just bothering me to know, why doesn't the back of the book overview not have ANYTHING to do with the actual book itself? In "Black Reign" the 2nd paragraph on the back of the book discusses Black, yet he's not even in the book. & in "Black Reign 2" the back of the book says 3 brother's including Junie, & Junie is not even alive in all of the book!

Although I haven't read the novel that this book is supposed to be a sequel too, I must say that I enjoyed this one. I did notice that the synopsis had nothing to do with the actual story and I saw a lot of upset reviewers mentioning this, but I would be lying if I said the story itself wasn't amazing.

I loved Angela's and Damien's relationship. Mcnair didn't go overboard with when describing his thuggish demeanor and he made him seem very real and very caring towards Angela. (I'm a lover of romance!). In the beginning I liked Mac too, but then he had to go off the deep end and just ruin everything. I believe just like all young girls Angela and Monica were just trying to figure out what they wanted in life, but ended up getting something different.

To me this book rated a five star because despite a few minor errors the story line was good and it kept my interest from page one. I tried to force myself to stay up until the wee hours of the night reading until my eyes started to cuss me out lol... I don't do that often. Mcnair don't take the criticism as a fail...let it ,motivate you brotha. Keep it up I'll be reading more of your work and I will be recommending this novel. #Semper Fi

Angela and Monica are on their way...to college that is! Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy, they're young and fine with tight bodies and expensive tastes, to boot! At every corner, they're looking for young men to pave the way and fulfill their every need...both sexual and financial. Oh, but does such thoughts EVER have consequences. These two young ladies find themselves in some harrowing situations that may prove to be deadly!

Again, I get the feeling that this author is trying to pen a novel for young adults, which is great, but I still have reservations about this novel. Granted, the main characters are just graduating high school and off to college, so they are naive and find themselves in dilemmas young adults their age and fresh out of high school often encounter. And that's fine, but I think the author should have included some sort of guidance at the end of the novel. This is not a book one would want their very young adult/still teen to read and just toss aside, there is some serious dialogue that should occur between the reader and parent/trusted adult.

I think these authors have a responsibility to guide their readers, especially the young and impressionable.

Another thing, the dialect really irked my nerves! And having gone to Hampton University, I cannot say that it's fully specific to the area.

That said, I very much enjoyed the friendships within this book...Angela and her sistahgurl Monica...the two of them and their platonic male friend Rome. It reminded me of my own college sistahgurl friendships and platonic friendships with males.

This Book is Good !

Norman Friedman has done a wonderful job of synthesizing the ideas of the whose who of Modern Physicists into an intriguing, easily understood presentation. It is quantum physics and its implications all without the math although the math is discussed. If you have ever struggled to understand the concepts of modern physics because the math got in the way (and you were saved by the class curve) then this book will finally tell you what you missed. If you haven't taken courses in the field, the book will clearly tell you the crazy implications. If you've read the writings of Jane Roberts you will be pleased to see that Seth's explainations of our world boundaries is pretty close to the current view. You can converse with great authority on modern physics after reading this book and actually sound intelligent. This is one great book. 5 Stars for Friedman

The Deep Spirit of Quantum Waves +++

This work is my favorite reader-friendly general presentation on Quantum Physics [and its tie-ins]. Physicist Norman Friedman uses images, metaphors and analogies, well-based in Quantum Physics, to explain Quantum Physics -- especially via wave-dynamics -- but also with Relativity, Multiiuniverse and Heisenberg's Dual Level Universe integrated. So, "The Hidden Domain" is a great general explanation of Modern Theoretical Physics -- and very compatible with WSM [Wave Structure of Matter].

Other modern physics is touched-upon along the way. Even older Classical Physics is in good summary to prepare for Modern Physics. Relativity and Quantum Particles are in good summary. Some usage is made of math diagrams, algebra and numbers -- but not a lot -- just when it is critical for clear and sharp understanding. There is a great chapter on the critcal usage of complex numbers in physics. These math areas of the book are at least semi-isolated -- so the reader can deal with such math when ready [or not].

"The Hidden Domain" has an excellent [and convincing] Relativity and Quantum Multiuniverse cross-comparison. Time, Energy, Bell's Theorem and Phase-Entanglement are all explained well. In addition, the really odd stuff such as paradox, mystery and inner-experience is explored in detail in a wonderful way. Philosophy of Consciousness tied-in with Modern Physics is covered as well as or better than any other works on such topics. The final tie-in with Jane Roberts and "Seth" shows Norman Friedman has unusual boldness, integrity and Spirit +++

Not quite ready for the future

Norman Friedman deserves credit for the way in which he manages to explain the concepts of 20th century physics so well. Unfortunately, his interpretation of quantum physics is rather conservative. The result is that he attempts to prop all of reality into a framework that is just too narrow and limited. It is not the definitive book on the relationship between modern physics and spirituality, but it's a good start.
