About the Author

Thomas M. Kane is Lecturer in international politics at the University of Hull. He specialises in the art of strategy, with a particular interest in its application in China. Relevant publications include Ancient China on Postmodern War (2007), Chinese Grand Strategy and Maritime Power (2005) and Military Logistics and Strategic Performance (2002).

David J. Lonsdale is Lecturer in strategic studies at the University of Hull. He specialises in strategic theory and its application to historical and contemporary settings. His recent publications include Alexander the Great: Lessons in Strategy (2007) and The Nature of War in the Information Age (2004).

This is a book ostensibly on contemporary strategy but only in old-fashioned British senses, something along the lines of "modern warfare", although perhaps it would be more aptly titled "The Dummy's Guide to War" - the structure is actually a mix of rather childish chapters on aspects of warfare that have been analyzed better elsewhere, and each chapter is a disorienting mix of historical anecdotes and maxims, thrown down at such a pace that one gets the sense that the writers were typing up whatever they recalled form their own undergraduate experiences, presumably towards the end of the Cold War. The authors rely far too heavily on Clausewitz, Machiavelli, and other long-dead philosophers, quoting single sentences out of context as if they were gospel; the only living "strategist" from whom the authors quote repeatedly is Colin S. Gray, to whom the book is dedicated, and the quotes are equally random. This is a book on contemporary strategy remember, but only the last 3 of 13 chapters are grouped under "contemporary strategic challenges" and one of them is on "Nuclear Strategy"! These chapters are so short and superficial as to read like a high-schooler's cut-and-paste collection from diverse blogs and wikis.

For instance, the chapter on terrorism begins with a review of what al-qaeda did on 9/11, then quotes from Clausewitz and Machiavelli and classics from the 1970s about the urban guerilla. A random collection of facts about mostly Cold War terrorist groups follows, then we get some platitudes of wisdom about counter-terrorism, such as (page 230): "Much of the time, no one counterterrorist organisation will be in a position to disrupt more than s small part of the terrorists' operations." Great. What might be the solution? None given. So what should be our "strategy"? Surprisingly, the authors don't have one anywhere, although on page 232 they did summarize the four "Ds" of US anti-terrorist strategy. D1: "Defeat terrorists and their organisations..." And the authors' reaction is? "Other analysts may prefer other lists." Wow. The conclusion to the chapter is entitled "everything new is old." This is where they introduce the concept of "new terrorism" - which was identified first in the 1990s and heralded the rise of extreme religious terrorists like Osama bin Laden, but the authors don't tell you this, and they really should have discussed it at the start of the chapter and focused on it. Instead, they allocate just 2 paragraphs to "new terrorism" and misrepresent it as the "dwindling of left-wing groups." The authors don't mention Osama bin Laden or analyze the complexities of new terrorism, instead they conclude that terrorism hasn't changed that much. The chapter on terrorism probably betrays better than any other the authors' ignorance of contemporary security.

Now you might be wondering if the rest of the book is nonetheless a good reference on the history of war. Sure, if you're 5 years old. For instance, take the chapter on "Land Warfare", page 124: "Tanks. Advantages: fast, armour protection...Disadvantages: limited mobility in rough terrain, poor visibility..." The authors' bad assumptions about military technology and doctrine is more noticeable in the chapters on air power (a history that ends in the wars in the former Yugoslavia, before the profound disputes about the uses of air power in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency) and naval power (almost all of it about British experiences with German threats, plus more quotes form Clausewitz of course). The chapter on "The human dimension of strategy" is most disappointing - it's mostly about "strategic culture", quoting the "pioneers' of that concept without the critics, as if it's universally accepted. Then the chapter devotes one page on morale, quoting Clausewitz repeatedly as if he is some sort of military psychologist, then 2 pages on cohesion, most of which summarizes S.L.A. Marshall's book from 1947. These chapters just betray the authors' dated and limited reading on their topics and their conservative attitudes and knowledge.

The final chapter is "Conclusion: patters in grand strategy today" - it runs for 3 pages and tells us that geography still matters, so do resources. And your final inspiration is "For both western powers and their potential opponents, the strategic challenge of the next decade may be that of securing the resources they may need to address sharper challenges later in the century." What will be those challenges and resources? Don't expect to find out from this book.

Substructures and foundations constitute formidable components of bridges, and often represent more than half of the total bridge cost. The methods of analysis, design, and detailing are therefore important, and can influence the structural performance and project budget.

The current extensive body of knowledge documents the concerted efforts made to advance the theory and practice of bridge engineering. This progress has encompassed the design of piers, abutments, walls and foundations, and is also evident in our present understanding of soil- structure interaction. Notable improvements are reflected in the use of materials with better physical and structural characteristics, and in the rational and more explicit analysis of structural behavior.

In the present synthesis of the new and old concepts, traditional approaches have been integrated with recently evolved design philosophies, producing design options that enhance the field of structural analysis. Thus, the deterministic methodology represented in the past by the allowable stress design can now be supplemented or completely replaced by load factor design, a statistically-based probabilistic approach. Although many engineers believe that in this merge certain discernible gaps and inconsistencies are bound to remain for some time, the concensus of opinion is that in the field of bridge design there are now more workable alternatives that can be successfully applied to the entire structure and its foundation.

The introduction of load factor design is now a key feature of structural analysis in most areas of structural engineering and in most parts of the world. Whereas it draws from completed research as well as from judgment, it also signifies new provisions and major areas of change. It addresses load and force models, load factors, nominal resistance and resistance factors, limit states, and the soil-structure system on a global basis. A logical extension is the consideration of the variability in the characteristics of structural elements, which is treated as the variability in the loads. Thus, the underlying philosophy moves bridge design toward a more rational and probability-based procedure, although the application of the working stress method is not excluded as an independent option.

The text is developed to achieve the following objectives: (a) present a systems study of substructure and foundation elements; (b) introduce an independent design methodology demonstrating compliance with AASHTO and other relevant specifications; (c) cover both the allowable stress method and the LRFD approach; and (d) include a sufficient number of design examples and case studies that show how to obtain credible solutions.

Chapter 1 provides a general review of pier types, abutments, wall systems, and foundation elements. Structure appearance and esthetics are discussed in conjunction with economic aspects. It appears that the process of selecting the visual characteristics of bridges and substructures represents largely an effort to create forms pleasing to the public in a format described in national terms, although bridge esthetics should also be examined in the context of structural requirements and budget con straints. Chapter 1 is completed with a discussion of subsurface explorations and foundation investigations, review of specifications and standards, and the fundamentals of cost relationship between superstructure and substructure.

Loads and loading groups are reviewed in Chapter 2. A comparison of design loads used in the United States and in other countries shows a broad variability in load models and magnitudes. However, the present AASHTO loads and forces have been expanded by the load models of the LRFD specifications, and these are intended to enhance the live load representation. As a logical exercise of resourceful judgment, the new loads could be scaled by appropriate load factors to be compatible with other load spectra.

Chapter 3 deals with methods of analysis and design, and articulates allowable stress and strength design procedures. A main concern is the reliability and uncertainty in the structural analysis. In routine practice, safety in working stress design is ensured by the application of a single factor of safety, usually taken as the ratio of design resistance to the design load. With the LRFD approach, reliability is ensured by treating both loads and resistances as random variables. Safety in the case is defined in terms of the probability of survival or the probability of failure.

Conventional piers are discussed in Chapter 4. This category includes piers for all-concrete slab bridges, concrete deck bridges on multi-beam systems, two-girder systems with floor beams and stringers, truss bridges, and bridges across waterways and rivers. Although the great variety of functional, structural and geometric requirements implies a corresponding variety of pier forms and configurations, this seeming multiplicity is reduced and consolidated to a discussion of pier selection criteria, load effects, column analysis, seismic considerations, structural capacity under combined axial compression and bending, section analysis, pier frame analysis, and piers integral with the superstructure. This chapter includes also a review of pier protection design provisions in navigable waterways.

If you disagree with the above, don't buy this book. If you agree with the above, then you
should buy this book. I am not sure how you can be a Christian if you disagree with the
third point (Gal 2:21).

Mr. Rokser makes the 3 above points clearer than any book I've read besides the Scripture.
Highly recommended. I will probably purchase a couple of copies for Christmas gifts.

Chapter on James 2 is worth the purchase price. Also includes a chapter on Matt 24, Olivet Discourse.

The Three Tenses of Salvation

SALVATION IN THREE TIME ZONES provides an excellent clarification of what the Bible means by the terms "saved" and "salvation," showing how these terms are used in Scripture to refer to either physical or spiritual deliverance.

Spiritual deliverance is in three phases or tenses: (1) salvation in the past from sin's penalty at justification; (2) salvation in the present from sin's power in sanctification; and (3) salvation in the future from sin's very presence at glorification. The salvation God provides is full and free!

The book is written in an easy-to-understand style that is not overly technical, with a few helpful diagrams, making it ideal for all believers to understand whether new in the faith or already mature.

A book devoted solely to this subject has been needed for a long time. Theology books often have sections devoted to the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and glorification and their relationship to one another, but this is the only book I'm aware of devoted entirely to the subject of the three tenses of salvation and that shows there is a clear biblical distinction between them and how understanding this distinction provides great assurance of God's grace to the believer in Christ. There are other valuable books that properly distinguish the three tenses of salvation that this reviewer would highly recommend, such as SALVATION by Lewis Sperry Chafer, SO GREAT SALVATION by J. F. Strombeck, SIN, THE SAVIOR, AND SALVATION by Robert Lightner. But Rokser's book is the only book I'm aware of that focuses solely upon the distinction between the three tenses of salvation for the express purpose of showing that a legalistic, works gospel inevitably results when not properly distinguishing the three tenses in passage after passage. This unique focus and purpose of the book is indicated by its subtitle: DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE THREE TENSES OF SALVATION?

SALVATION IN THREE TIME ZONES explains why God's free gift of salvation is one of the most wonderful and vital subjects in the entire Bible and why distinguishing between the three tenses of salvation is essential for every believer's personal assurance, spiritual growth, and correct and consistent interpretation of God's Word. The conclusion of the book is that God's grace guarantees the believer in Christ a past and future salvation, while also providing all that is necessary for salvation from sin's power in the present.

One of the greatest values of this book is its explanation and clarification of many difficult passages. Three chapters at the end of the book cover three separate "test passages" to determine which type and tense of salvation is being referred to (Matthew 24:13; 1 Corinthians 3:15; and James 2:14-26). The explanation of James 2 is so thorough and clear that it alone is worth the price of the book.

This book is highly recommended for all believers and even for unbelievers who may be struggling to understand what the Bible teaches about God's salvation all by His grace from beginning to end.

About the Author

Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus at the College of Business, Rochester Institute of Technology where he has taught organizational behavior, leadership and career management. His research interests include human relations and business psychology. His research has been reported in Entrepreneur, Psychology Today, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Small Biz, and over 100 national magazines and local newspapers.

 

Terri Geerinck is a faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Studies Centre at Sir Sandford Fleming College. She teaches several courses including Introductory Psychology, Social Psychology, and Interpersonal and Group Dynamics. As part of a team, she has also delivered human relations training to business and industry with a particular emphasis on problem solving, interpersonal communication skills, and conflict management. Her teaching interests are instructional design, methodology, prior learning assessment, and course conversion to web-based formats. Before teaching at Sir Sandford Fleming, she held various consulting positions in several communities in Ontario. Terri Geerinck's formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology from Brock University and a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University.

Good reference but a bit steep on the price

I bought this book recently, as it seemed to provide some information about dealing with stocks that were handed down, along with what I perceived as the broad coverage it provided on several relevant topics. I am a PIO and have dealings with India both on the business and personal front. Matters covered in the book such as Income Tax, property, securities, banking, gifting, etc. are all relevant and useful.

This book is current up to 2012, but there have been several changes since then in the law. It would be good to see a supplement or an updated edition soon. The price is a bit steep, as not everyone will get as much value out of it. It is a good reference and starting point for google searches now. It would be great to have regional law supplements as those topics are a reference black hole.

I am happy to have a copy as a ready reference, but much of the information is actually available online, though requires time and patience to find.

I'd up the rating to 4/5 if (a) it were more current or an update would be offered at a less princely price and (b) if the price were around the $15 range. i.e. it is a comment on its value to me than its broad content. From a content perspective, if it covered regional/local law/practices, it would be of greater value.

I made this purchase because as other reviewers have mentioned finding this information online can be incredibly challenging and time consuming. I was searching for medical visa information and this was one of the only resources I was able to find with comprehensive details. There was also an abundance of other information. Best resource for NRIs I've been able to find.

I purchased this about a week ago (Jan 2016) and the book is current - looks like it was just updated.

I bought this book after it was recommedned to me by a friend. Money well spent. The information in the book turned out to be lot more detail than I had expected. And it also covers lot of topics that are important to people living outside india. I would recommended it to anyone who is interested in getting information about variety of topics including india taxes and how they might play role in your investment in india.
